Dawn is a character from "Buffy the vampire slayer".
She's Buffy's sister... but in fact, she was created by monks, and she's, infact, a "key".

"Mental" people don't see her as a human, but as a green glimmer....

Dawn is Buffy the Vampire Slayer's little sister, who was actually a ball of energy, given to her in the form of a pre-made sister by monks who were in charge of guarding it. They were protecting it from Glory, a goddess who wanted to use it to open a hole where she would reach her power over the earth (destroying it and Dawn in the process).

They knew Buffy could safeguard it (and the planet in the process) and everyone around Dawn received memories of Dawn having always been Buffy's little sister, though of course she didn't exist before the monks made her.

They made her out of Buffy, and so when Glory had Dawn ready for the sacrifice, and was going to (slit her throat? can't remember) and drop her into the wormhole or inferno or whatever, Buffy jumped instead ("death is your gift") and it closed the wormhole, prevented the apocalypse, saved Dawn and the planet...... and Buffy died. Again. Dawn became a real girl then (and I don't remember just why, do you, Lez?).

I now remember the history of Buffy and her sister! I have not seen the telefilm for different time

And Buffy & Dawn's mother knew, while she was suffering from the brain tumor, and thus mentally altered, that Dawn wasn't her daughter, but somehow "belongs to us", was special, and made Buffy vow to protect her.

All very noble and silly and over the top, and it still makes me tear up these years after having seen it.

I don't remember her becoming a real girl, but I remember Buffy giving her a "you're a real person" speech, cutting her own arm to show Dawn they had the same blood.

Yes, and the monks sent her as if she had already been in the family since she was born.

There was never any more mention of her as the key, she just got to be a troubled adolescent after that, but no more special stuff--just that nice speech from Xander. I had the impression that once Glory's wormhole went pffft with Buffy's blood, that the power was broken--------but they dropped the energy thing after that, surely if she still had that kind of potential energy it could have been useful at the end, even if Buffy denied them the use of it for Dawn's sake.

“Today is the day for which you were created”....Walternate could have told this to the team, but maybe he was referring to Peter. It's possible....humm..
