| Mayans have two calendars too ! Both have two calendars, one for the 365 days year (haab), one for the religious (260 days) year (tzolkin). The same 5 days of bad luck. Mayans called those five days "the bridge/stairs that leads them to next year". The two calendars are so complex that the same combination of dates happens every 374 440 years only.
In my book, it is described (the two calendars system) as a symbol of "the irreversible and yet, infinite loop). | |

I'm working on a cleaned up version of the Tonalpohualli calendar to upload in a bit. And a guy making a movie about the end of world in 2012...................... | |

| I know! When the descendants of the creators, who still use the calendar, say the end of the age brings a re-set. This is a cool quote: - Quote :
- Researchers believe that the Mayan calendar actually hinges upon its calculated end point. What is so important about the winter solstice of 2012? The Milky Way seems to have played an important part in Mayan mythology. The Mayan Sacred Tree appears to be the crossing point of the sun’s path, the ecliptic, with the Milky Way. The conjunction of the sun with the Milky Way at the winter solstice in 2012 A.D. appears to have had apocalyptic significance. The crossing of the Milky Way with the ecliptic represents a doorway – pointing both to the sacred source and origin – the finishing of the old and the beginning of a new birth. Thus the world, in 2012, is pictured as being at a celestial “crossroads.”
To the Mesoamerican Mayas, the approach of the end of a World Age – the time when the winter solstice “Doorway” opened up the Sacred Tree to the Center of the Milky Way and the Heart of the Sky – was a very significant and epochal time. The Mayan Long Count was also known to the Yucatan Maya as a “prophecy cycle. | |

| It's all actually arbitrary (the start date) anyway, I think.... Here's the cleanest I can get that image: (bleedin' photobucket!) (original here Tonalpohualli And I would like to know the source of that colored image you showed, Lez, so I could see it. It looks a bit like this from the Mayan calendar and prophecies site: --and tell me please folks if you cannot see these, it's not fair for me to talk about things you can't see. And while I sort out links, I will put them in, so you can understand, as that is only fair too. --here is a description of how they count :http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/tzolkinmaya/esp_tzolkinmaya05.htm (does get weird at the end )

| They are both thumbnails, they pop to bigger pix when you click on them. The 2nd one is actually a lot of that goofiness, deals with 3rd and 4th dimensions (but doesn't mean what you think that means, it's all harmonic convergence junk)---but the wheel in the corner looks like a black and white version of that colored one Lez showed. | |

| I found the pic here, the meaning is from a book (and I see it is on the website, too). A book by Chevalier and Gheerbrandt. | |

I think that racoca meant the second image ---that has now disappeared--- when I clicked on the thumbnail it was a tiny tiny picture (100x150 px).

| No, it was that browser crash---I was uploading pics at the same time, and the links got all messed up, but you don't see it on the page, just when you copy the code and paste it.......... it's wrong. So you have to close it and reload it TWICE to straighten the codes out. ARGH.
------------thanks for the link to that page! I'll have to read it in depth. The colors seem to go with that quadrant illustration--which is maybe from the Popol vuh, I am not sure, but it is a European copy of a Mesoamerican image, has Spanish writing on the edge saying where the explanation of the symbols is (in that manuscript, sadly, not online).
Or maybe one of the Codexes, more likely. | |

| Some color symbolism: - Quote :
- Color symbolism laden with cultural significance are key elements in reconfiguring reality through magical speech.
The Aztecs and the Maya had a color-direction system as complex as any culture. The system was widely adopted in pieces throughout North America. The militaristic Aztecs had many exception; while conceptually very similar to Mayan tradition, they made many changes as well. | East | South | West | North | Maya | Red | Yellow | Black | White | Aztec | Red Yellow Green | Blue | White | Black | Red = flowers, Quetzalcoatl. Cit Chac Coh, the Maya god of war, is a red puma. Black= cold and arid, Tezcatlipoca. Black was the color for Uzin, the Mayadeath god, who wore black and yellow spots, and Tezcatlipoca is always black. Ixtilton, the god of lust, is black-faced, like the black-faced Aztec dancers who represented ghosts. White = cold and arid, Mixcoatl. Yellow = south, dry and spring, Huitzilopochtli and Mictantecuhti, Blue-green(Turquoise) = prosperity, rain and storm gods like Tlaloc. Turquoise was the color of gods and royalty. Also the color of natural life and fecundity. Maya's clothing during the spring month Yaxkin, when fields were fired for sowing, was all turquoise
In the beginning, then, the world was black and white

| ?What?eta, here's the link to that other image: http://www.lost-civilizations.net/mayan-calendar-prophecies-page-2.html -------and if we needed any more reasons to not want to take part in their religions, nor hope that BR is using them to make the story of the Weapon: - Quote :
- Until the mid-20th century, scholars believed the Maya to be apeaceful, stargazing people, fully absorbed in their religion andastronomy and not violent like their neighboring civilizations to thenorth. This was based on the Maya's impressive culture and scientificdiscoveries and a very limited translation of their written texts.
But since then, nearly all of the Mayan hieroglyphic writingshave been deciphered, and a much different picture has emerged. Thetexts record that the Mayan rulers waged war on rival Mayan cities, took their rulers captive, then tortured them and ritually sacrificedthem to the gods. In fact, human sacrifice seems to have been acentral Mayan religious practice. It was believed to encouragefertility, demonstrate piety, and propitiate the gods. The Mayan godswere thought to be nourished by human blood, and ritual bloodlettingwas seen as the only means of making contact with them. The Mayabelieved that if they neglected these rituals, cosmic disorder andchaos would result. At important ceremonies, the sacrificial victim washeld down at the top of a pyramid or raised platform while a priestmade an incision below the rib cage and ripped out the heart with hishands. The heart was then burned in order to nourish the gods. It was not only the captives who suffered for the sake of the gods:the Mayan aristocracy themselves, as mediators between the gods andtheir people, underwent ritual bloodletting and self-torture. Thehigher one's position, the more blood was expected. Blood was drawn byjabbing spines through the ear or penis, or by drawing a thorn-studdedcord through the tongue; it was then spattered on paper or otherwisecollected as an offering to the gods. http://www.religionfacts.com/mayan_religion/index.htm
